Iberdrola notified Spain’s CNMV on 27 October of a $1.6 billion green bond issue aimed at institutional investors inside and outside the United States, Infobae reported. The utility said it was its first direct US transaction since 2009, opening a financing channel in a market where its US subsidiaries were already active.

According to Iberdrola, the issue comprises two $800 million tranches. Infobae said one tranche matures on 4 November 2029 with a 5.40% annual fixed coupon, while the other matures on 4 November 2033 with a 5.85% annual fixed coupon.

The company said the proceeds will finance or refinance US electricity network assets, principally transmission assets, and renewable facilities under its Green Financing Framework. Iberdrola plans to invest $5 billion a year in the United States in the coming years, Infobae said.

Iberdrola said demand exceeded $5 billion, with 116 investors participating, mostly from the United States. It said the issue’s green designation helped lift demand inside and outside the country. The company also said the transaction would diversify its funding sources and that its final cost was comparable to what it could have obtained in the Euro market.

The issue follows Iberdrola’s stated plan to increase the share of green and sustainable products in its financing. The company said 99% of the financing it signed in 2025 was sustainable and that its sustainable financing exceeded €66 billion at year-end, ESG Today reported.
